  • Happy Nurses Week

Belated happy nurses week to everyone and happy hospital week. THANK YOU for all that you do!

  • President's Message: National Nurses Week

    President's Message

    May 6, 2021

National Nurses Week is an excellent opportunity to reflect on our SoCal ANIA nursing chapter members. A nurse is selfless, resilient, supportive, reassuring, and a dedicated team player. With incredible compassion, nurses unite and orchestrate the expertise and talents of the various members of the clinical team.

Every time I interact with our chapter nursing members, I am inspired by our chapter nurses’ dedication, courage, and talent. Creating powerful human interactions between caregivers who are working together to relieve suffering and improve lives will always be at the heart of who we are. That’s why I want to emphasize the importance of cultivating relationships, amongst your local peers as well as our SoCal ANIA chapter colleagues. The utmost compassion you display as you strive to care for the most vulnerable COVID 19-patients over the last year is truly remarkable.

I encourage you to celebrate with each other and to take time this week and reflect on the many lives you have changed, the lives you have saved and the families you have supported. You make a difference every day.

Happy Nurses Week to the SoCal ANIA Nursing Family!

With my sincere thanks and regards,

    Melissa Arnold, MBA, BSN
    SoCal ANIA Chapter President

  • Celebrating Nurses Month!

A message from your Midwest Region Chapter ANIA leadership: Celebrating nurses’ month

    Dear Chapter Member,

May 2021 has been designated by the ANA as Nurses’ Month.  In previous years, nurses across the globe have celebrated Florence Nightingale’s birthday as the humble beginnings of modern nursing practice. In recognition of nursing’s numerous contributions in recent times, the ANA has extended the celebration to include the entire month.  Each week has been identified to focus on a specific topic important to nursing practice.  The week of May 1-9 is focused on Self Care for nurses with emphasis on both the physical and mental well-being of our caregivers.  Your Chapter leadership would like to recognize the many challenges affecting our Informatics Nurse colleagues over this past year.

While not often on the front lines delivering physical patient care, Informatics Nurses have nonetheless made significant contributions to managing patient care throughout the pandemic.  With higher acuity patients and surges in patient volumes, NIs were called upon to decrease documentation burden for those delivering care. Fast tracking EMR changes to accommodate local, state, and national requests became a norm.  Additional challenges were presented in finding creative ways to track patients, analyze big data patterns, and present data in meaningful packages to decision makers.  Some NIs volunteered to administer vaccinations, staff patient call centers, and identify potential pockets of underserved patient populations.

On other fronts, NI’s found themselves navigating furloughs, canceled implementations, and remote work.  This was mentally exhausting for those who tried to support thousands of short term/traveler staff to utilize EMRs.  Planned projects and upgrades were moved to back burners while staff focused efforts on emergency changes only. Through these tough times have emerged Nis with new skill sets, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a better understanding of the impact of their work for patient care.

Now is the time to take a moment to breathe and implement some self-care routines before moving on to a new normal in your organization.  Find a way to take a walk, have a spa moment, read, listen to your favorite artist, meditate.  Schedule “me” time into your routine and guard that as sacred time.

    Happy Nurse’s Month!

  • 2020 Distinguished Chapter

  • Happy 2021 Ohio ANIA members!

From Jill Evans Ohio ANIA Chapter President

I wanted to take some time to thank you all for continuing to be members of the Ohio Chapter of ANIA and moving forward Nursing Informatics within your organizations.

As our new year starts, I wanted to send a sincere Thank You to our out-going officers, past President Barb Bungard and past Treasurer Michael O’Malley. Both worked very hard for our Chapter over the past year traversing a new landscape as all our meetings and educational offerings needed to be moved virtual. All of us strived to keep the chapter up to date with what was going on and offering a venue to learn a little bit more about the organizations we all represent. Barb did a wonderful job thinking of topics all members would be interested in and finding members and organizational leaders to speak at our educational offerings and our year end meeting. A very big THANK YOU to Michael who worked to get our final meeting/educational session to be eligible for CEUs for all of us who attended. Thank you to Renee Vitullo, our very first Chapter President, for posting all our offerings and newsletters on our Chapter web page.

I also want to take some time to Welcome our newest members of the Ohio ANIA leadership team: President-elect Stacy Farnan and Treasurer Karen Goda.

Here is a little bit about our newest Ohio Chapter leaders:

Stacy Farnan MSN, RN is a Clinical Informatic Analyst II at MetroHealth Systems in Cleveland, Ohio. Stacy studied at the University of Missouri graduating with a Biology degree working as a laboratory technologist at a nuclear research reactor. Stacy went on to receive her BSN for Ursuline college and worked at MetroHealth as a Med-Surg nurse for several years then becoming a Trauma case Manager. Stacy transitioned into her role as a Clinical Analyst II on the inpatient team in 2017 while finishing her MSN through Chamberlain College.

In Stacy’s Informatics role she is working/has worked on projects such as MetroHealth’s order Set review and maintenance process, human trafficking documentation workflows, and is the lead Informaticist for the implementation of Transfer Center and MetroHealth’s Hospital@Home and Remote Patient Monitoring programs. Stacy is a mother of 6 and resides in Northeast Ohio.

Karen Goda, ND, RN-BC is a Program Manager in Nursing Informatics and Evidence-Based Practice at Bon Secours Mercy Health and serves as the nurse informaticist for ambulatory and post-acute care.  Karen was a neonatal intensive care/stepdown nurse for many years and then transitioned to pediatric ambulatory nursing.  Her nursing informatics journey started as an instructor and then transitioned to a builder role for multiple Epic applications/modules for several health systems.  Karen has been ANCC Board Certified in Informatics Nursing since 2014.  She has served on the ANCC Standard Setting Study for Informatics Nursing, assisting in the development of the certification exam.  Karen has recently completed a term as a Commissioner on Certification for the ANCC, which allowed her to promote excellence in nursing and help create programs to recognize the individual nurse.  Professional memberships include ANIA and HIMSS.  Karen and her husband have two grown children and live on the far east side of Cleveland.  In her spare time, she likes working on multiple knitting projects, buying way too much yarn, and taking the dog on walks to chase squirrels.

We are working on this year’s educational offering sessions and meetings. Much like 2020, we are planning to maintain the virtual platform throughout 2021. As a team we are brainstorming ideas of educational offerings so if you have any ideas, would like to present a topic, or would like to highlight your organization in the Chapter newsletter, please contact me at We are looking for other ways for the chapter to communicate and stay in touch with its members, if you have any ideas, please contact any of us (contact information below).

Again – thank you all for participating in the Ohio ANIA Chapter and I look forward to seeing you all virtually this year.
