This presentation aims to integrate the emerging era of artificial intelligence into the current state of our nursing and healthcare needs while also recognizing the emerging role that informatics nurses will have as the technology further develops and is sought out for use either by vendors or healthcare leaders. An overarching aim of the presentation will be to:

     1) Reinforce that AI is another technology that should be evaluated in the same way that we as informatics have approached any technological solution. While the specifics will change, the process will largely remain the same.
    2) Informatics nurses will be looked upon as experts in this emerging field. While AI is new for all, it will be the responsibility of informatics nurses to be prepared through education and where able, experience on how to use AI tools.
(After registering, you will be able to save it to your calendar)
Dr. Tiffany Kelley PhD MBA RN NI-BC is a leading expert on the topics of healthcare innovation and informatics in the contemporary times of delivering safe, efficient, timely, patient-centered, effective, and equitable care to patients and their families. She is the Founder and CEO of iCare Nursing Solutions, a company established in 2015 to address the informatics and health IT educational needs of nurses as well as the professional consulting needs of health centers and organizations for new health IT solutions.

Introducing Jean Scholz Mellum PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CPHQ !

Jean Scholz Mellum is an Associate Professor at Capital University’s School of Nursing. She enjoys teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Scholz Mellum’s research interests led her to informatics in 2014 when as a PhD student, she attended her first Big Data Nursing Science conference in Minneapolis. With her role at the Ohio Nurses Association in the 1990s, Jean was a leader in early work to define standards and guidelines so nurses and nursing would show up in electronic databases. Her experiences in health policy at the Ohio Hospital Association and the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence continued to highlight the value of the data to wisdom continuum. Yet she did not really know about the foundational Data to Wisdom Continuum until she was asked to teach informatics and technology in healthcare at Capital University.

In her teaching role, Scholz Mellum brings her background and experience to the classroom to prepare students for using informatics and technology to improve patient care. Her research on identifying standards and competencies for combining nursing informatics and practice has been presented at the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) International Forum (2022) and American Nurses Informatics Association (ANIA) Annual Meeting (2023). She is excited to work with the Ohio ANIA chapter on a mixed methods research study to identify what members and other leaders think are the necessary informatics competencies needed for undergraduate and graduate nurse education.

Dr. Scholz Mellum is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for advanced executive nursing practice and was selected to the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Leadership fellowship. She is also certified in healthcare quality by the National Association for Healthcare Quality. She received her BSN at Ohio Wesleyan University, her MS from The Ohio State University College of Nursing, and her PhD in Nursing Research at the University of Cincinnati. She is a member of ANIA, American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) and American Nurses Association (ANA-Ohio).

  • Welcome Your New Board of Director Members!

    Dear colleagues,

I am writing to inform you about the outcome of the nomination process that took place this fall. We had two candidates who expressed their interest in serving on the Board of Directors (BOD) for the TN Chapter of ANIA. One candidate applied for the position of President-Elect and the other for the Communication Chair. No one applied for the position of Secretary. Therefore, there was no need to hold an election.

Please join me in congratulating the new members of the BOD and thanking them for their willingness to serve our organization.

The new board members will start their 2-year term on January 1st, 2024. They will work closely with the current BODs to ensure a smooth transition. We are also sending out a call for volunteers to fill the vacant position of Secretary. If you are interested in this role or know someone who might be, please let us know.

    President-Elect: Ron Reed, MSN, RN

I am a former US Navy officer who has pursued a diverse and enriching career in nursing and informatics. I have worked in various roles, from medical receptionist to assistant manager, gaining clinical, administrative, and leadership skills. I have also been involved in clinical informatics since 2003, applying IT solutions to improve healthcare delivery for our staff and patients.

I am proud to share that I have a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a focus on Clinical Informatics. Since 2013, I have been working at LifePoint Health as a Director of Clinical Informatics. This role has been the most rewarding one in my career so far, as it allows me to use my clinical and informatics skills to improve healthcare outcomes. I have been leading the efforts to optimize electronic health records (EHR) systems, support data-driven decisions, and promote the use of technology in evidence-based practice.

I have always been passionate about lifelong learning and professional development. I constantly look for opportunities to learn from and contribute to the field of nursing informatics, as well as to mentor others and advance the profession.

Communications Chair: Brea Bowers, MSN, RN

Brea Bowers currently serves as an IT Clinical Education Specialist at Regional One Health Hospital in Memphis, TN. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Natural Science at Christian Brothers University. Discovering her passion in Nursing, she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Loewenberg University’s School of Nursing in Memphis. During her time as a graduate student, she received the 50 Leaders of Loewenberg College of Nursing award.

Brea’s nursing career includes nine years of Nursing experience in patient-centered care, leadership, research, and IT. Brea continues to educate staff members in her current role as an IT Clinical Education Specialist. SE Educational Committee Webinar: Transitioning from Bricks and Mortar to New Models of Care: Implications for Nursing Informatics

The explosion of sensor technologies, mHealth applications, and telehealth has led to an era of “Connected Health” in which technology facilitates novel, patient-focused care delivery models. These technological advances have outpaced the traditional healthcare and nursing informatics practice methods, and the healthcare AI market is expected to grow by 37% annually until 2030.

Plan to hear Rosemary Kennedy, Chief Health Informatics Officer at Connect America, discuss this fascinating field and opportunity at a lunchtime presentation.  Rosemary describes herself on LinkedIn as a Healthcare Informatics Consultant with a passion for delivering innovative, value-based healthcare utilizing health information technology and process redesign to improve quality, safety, costs, and performance.

This activity has been submitted to Georgia Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. Georgia Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
