Kathy Klimpel, PhD, CNS, ACHIP

Dr. Kathy Klimpel is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of San Diego, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science teaching in the Healthcare Informatics Program. Her research interest includes how the use of electronic health records (EHR) and technology, specifically the use of clinical decision support, can positively impact nursing practice and patient outcomes.
Dr. Kathy Klimpel has over 40 years of healthcare experience as a registered nurse, clinical nurse specialist, and clinical informaticist. For three decades as a CNS, she was a leader of healthcare teams striving to improve and optimize the care provided to children in critical care units. She has had positions in several places across the country (Washington University in St. Louis, National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center, University of Maryland in Baltimore, and currently Rady Children’s Health-San Diego). Those experiences have been invaluable as she took on her role as an informaticist. In the past 20 years, Dr. Klimpel was the operational lead for the implementation of two electronic health records (EHR), Meditech and Epic. Once implemented, Dr. Klimpel became Epic certified in two applications. In her current position as a Senior Clinical Informaticist at Rady Children’s Health-San Diego, she continues to work with clinicians to maintain and optimize the EHR to support clinicians while enhancing patient outcomes.
She has been a member of the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) since 2014 and has served on the board of San Diego ANIA since 2019 in various positions. She is also a member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and an AMIA Certified Health Informatics Professional (ACHIP).

As Director of Clinical Services at TRL Systems, Jessica Cheverie, MSN, RN, plays a pivotal role in helping healthcare organizations across Southern California leverage technology to improve patient care, enhance safety and optimize workflows. With more than 20 years of experience in nursing and healthcare leadership, Jessica collaborates with nursing executives and hospital teams to address complex challenges and implement innovative solutions that create more efficient and productive healthcare environments.
With a master’s degree in nursing informatics, Jessica brings a unique combination of clinical expertise and data-driven insight to her role. She works closely with TRL clients on training and education, workflow optimization, and the implementation of emerging technologies. Her background includes a strong foundation in metrics, informatics, and leadership, making her a key resource for advancing healthcare technology solutions.
Jessica’s career journey reflects a deep commitment to healthcare innovation. She began her nursing career at the bedside before transitioning to nursing informatics. She led data collection and metrics projects for government healthcare systems, including the world's second-largest labor and delivery unit. She has contributed to pilot programs, supported hospital informatics initiatives, and become a sought-after speaker on healthcare workflows and patient-centered technology.
Jessica is a member of the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). San Diego ANIA served in the past as secretary and currently serving as chapter treasurer.

CDR Jack is a native of Upstate New York, earning her commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps, Nurse Option program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York.
She first reported to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), VA. from 2008 to 2011, there she assumed a variety of clinical and nursing leadership positions starting on the Complicated OB/GYN Ward. In early 2010, she was deployed to the USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) for Operation Unified Response following a devastating earthquake in Haiti. Upon returning to NMCP, she transitioned to the Adult Intensive Care Unit until her transfer to Naval Hospital Twentynine Palms, CA in 2011.
From 2011 to 2012, she trained in the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum Unit. In 2012 she transitioned to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic as the Clinic Nurse Manager and Division Officer. Here she managed a clinic of Corpsmen, Providers, and Civilians, triaged patients in person and via telephone, and provided teaching for patients as well as staff. She assisted in re-establishing the Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) program and provided care to sexual assault victims aboard the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, until her rotation in late 2014. In 2014 she earned a Master of Science in Health Informatics degree from National University. During this tour, she was also accepted into the Perioperative program. Upon completion of training she reported to Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA (NMCSD).
As a perioperative nurse at NMCSD she quickly became a part of the Cardiothoracic Surgical team, while being the Vascular Surgical team lead, leading four surgical technicians, two surgeons, overseeing the management of supplies, as well as orienting taff to the cardiac cauterization lab. In 2016 she was assigned to the USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) as part of the full operating staff (FOS) crew for Pacific Partnership 2016 mission. Here she was the Department Head of the Main Operating Room, supervising our perioperative nurses and 18 surgical technicians in over 300 surgeries all while collaborating with host and partner nation teams across five countries in professionalseminars and surgical cases.
In 2018, she was assigned to Naval Medical Readiness Training Command (NMRTC), Twentynine Palms, CA. As the Sterile Processing Department Division Officer, she oversaw the renovation of the department, to include installation of new processing equipment, floorplan designs, and a sterilization contract. She provided and maintained up-to-date training for five perioperative nurses, eight surgical technicians, and various clinic staff on high level disinfection and sterilization processes. She also held the position of Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) during the Go Live of MHS Genesis.
From 2021 until 2023, CDR Jack served as the DSS/DMS (ROS) aboard the USNS Mercy (T-AH 19). Successfully completing Pacific Partnership 2022, which completed medical lines of effort events in four countries and ancillary care for 14,000 patients ashore and 300 on board. She is also credited with piloting the operational platform utilization of the newly published SPD PQS, qualifying 29 sailors in the Sterile Processing Department.
Since 2023, CDR Jack has served as the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer for NMCSD as well as the Chief Health Informatics Officer for the Defense Health Network, Pacific Rim from SEP 2023 until MAY 2025.
Commander Jack’s personal decorations include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), along with several service and unit awards.
