  • Innovations Now and on the Horizon

    Dr. Brian Weirich is the Chief Nursing Innovation Officer at Bon Secours Mercy Health, where he leads the integration of emerging technologies and the exploration of innovative models of care delivery. With a diverse leadership background, Brian has held key roles at Banner Health, Indiana University Health, University of Colorado Health, Ohio State Medical Center, and Cleveland Clinic, where he began his career as an ICU nurse. Brian holds a Doctorate in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Master's in Healthcare Administration from Ohio University, where he also earned his Bachelor's in Nursing. He is certified in Executive Nursing Practice and holds a specialized certification in Artificial Intelligence from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business. Known for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, Brian gained a reputation as the "Incognito CNO" when he chose to return to the bedside, working over 1,000 hours on med-surg COVID units. This experience reinforced his hands-on approach to leadership and commitment to patient care during a critical time. Brian was recently recognized by Becker's as a top Innovation Officers to know and is a recipient of Modern Healthcare's Forty under 40, 2025 class. Brian often advocates for the role of technology in healthcare, particularly for the millennial generation. He co-authored The Nurse's Guide to Innovation and is the founder of two health tech startups. Brian is a recipient of the Advancement in Medicine Innovation Grant from the IU School of Medicine and remains active in the healthcare startup community, advising and sitting on the boards of emerging tech companies. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Describe how emerging technologies such as AI-powered ambient documentation and real-time location systems (RTLS) can reduce administrative burden and improve nursing workflow efficiency.
