Building Your Public Health Informatics Toolkit

June 15, 2022 noon Central to 1 pm Central (1 pm Eastern to 2 pm Eastern)

In 2022, there is still well-documented evidence on the education and training gaps that persists in informatics. Many of the themes hinge on the ability of our healthcare systems to exchange electronic information such as inability to send or receive information, inability to extract information from EHRs, variability in usage of vocabulary standards, and interface-related issues when exchanging data.

As informaticians, we are responsible for designing EHRs that align with the workflows of clinicians, but also allow for seamless creation, manipulation, and extraction of that information for usage in downstream applications like public health. The foundation of public health data begins with the generation of that data from one of its largest sources: the EHR. Thus, it is critical that informaticians working at the hospital and health system level be aware of the impact of their decisions when implementing data solutions within the EHR.

Our presenter is Brian K. Fung, PharmD, MPH, BCPS.  Dr. Fung is a Health Data Architect at Verily. He is responsible for the design of the databases to support the usage of HL7 FHIR and clinical data standards for healthcare interoperability.

Learning objectives:

  1. Define public and population health informatics
  2. Explain the importance of clinical data standards
  3. Illustrate how EHR data impacts public health
  1. Demonstrate an example of public health informatics using the NHSN’s HAI Surveillance Program

Pre-registration, email, session attendance, and survey completion are required for nursing education credit. Nursing education credit is offered in conjunction with Indiana University Health and provisioned by the Ohio Nurses Association.  The Ohio Nurses Association will award contact hours in adherence with ANCC criteria. If the follow-up survey does not arrive as expected, please check your junk or spam folders (many organizations have strengthened security with external email).  Also consider using a personal email for registration of organizational firewalls prohibit delivery. When registering, please look carefully at your input email (as miskeys can make things challenging).
