It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Houston ANIA Chapter. Coming back from the National ANIA Conference in New Orleans, we were "jazzed" up to share what we learned along with the 468 in attendance.

The 2017 Tracks surrounded areas of:

    • Implementation and Optimization Strategies
    • Innovation in Practice
    • Leadership Strategies
    • Quality Improvement and Patient Outcomes
    • Role and Career Development

Many of the buzz was how to extend to the bedside staff in terms of not only knowledge of informatics but also ownership of once was known to be driven by IT departments. In addition, going from "emotional intelligence" to "team intelligence".

Those that represented the Greater Houston Chapter at the National ANIA Conference were the following:

    • CHI Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center
    • Hospital Corporation of America (HCA)
    • Houston Methodist
    • Memorial Hermann Health System
    • North Cypress Medical Center
    • The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston - School of Biomedical Informatics

Also, we had great representation in poster presentations:
Poster Presenter: Jonathan Gecomo, MSN, RN, CVRN II
Facility: CHI Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center
Title: Leveraging Technology to Reduce Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections

Poster Presenters: Adrian Bituin, BSN, RN & Liana Larson, BSN, RN
    Facility: North Cypress Medical Center
Title: Medication Reconciliation: The Electronic Evolution

Poster Presenter: Regina Wysocki, MS, RN
    Facility: Memorial Hermann Health System
Title: Identifying Acute MI patients via the use of an embedded EHR quality measure

Consider submitting for next year's ANIA Conference in Florida:
Call for Oral Presentation Abstracts - open until June 30, 2017
Call for Poster Presentation Abstracts - open until December 15, 2017

At our Houston - ANIA meeting held earlier this month, we shared this information in our April Meeting. In addition, we had a great discussion with our presenters Dr. Okafor, MD, MS, CMQ, Associate VP & CMIO – Acute Care Services for the Memorial Hermann Health System and Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine at Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center, myself and Regina Wysocki, MS, RN both Clinical Information Analyst at Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center surrounding the topic, "For the Nursing Informaticist: "Making sense of the customer's request for better patient outcomes"

Next time you receive a request to change something. . ask yourself, "What problem are you trying to solve?"
